Your Owner’s Manual
There’s a whole lot that applies to ATVs in general when it comes to DIY maintenance, but your model may have some specific requirements or instructions. You’ll find these in the owner’s manual, including how and when to service your Kawasaki quad and sometimes even with recommended products.
Protect the Battery
The battery is a simple component, but it’s vital to keeping your Kawasaki ATV running. If it’s not charged up, your engine won’t get a spark from the plugs, the lights and gauges won’t work, and the ignition won’t turn over. To keep it in good condition, take a look at the battery posts every month or so. These are the metal parts that connect the battery to the rest of your vehicle's components, and they should be clean.
If you notice any corrosion or a layer of crust on the battery posts, you’re probably going to need a new battery. During the winter, also make sure to remove your battery and put it on a tender. If you allow your battery to drain during the off-season, it might not ever hold a charge again, so you can save a lot of money by keeping it charged up.
Driveline
Your Kawasaki ATV has a driveline that distributes engine power to the wheels. This is a moving part, like a chain or a belt, and if you don’t take care of it, it’ll get jammed. To ensure smooth movement, apply a chain lubricant to it regularly, and also check the tension. If it’s too tight or too loose, you’ll want to bring it into our service department for an adjustment.
Tire Pressure
Tires are the most ignored parts when it comes to DIY maintenance but they shouldn’t be. It’s important to regularly check and adjust the tire pressure on your Kawasaki ATV. If you ignore the pressure for too long, you could get stuck with a flat, or worse, lose control because of a blowout. You can pick up a tire pressure gauge for fairly cheap. Always fill up before going out if your tires look low.
Oil
Oil keeps your quad’s engine components from destroying each other and needs regular changes, just like the oil in your passenger car or truck. When inspecting your oil, make sure it doesn’t have any metal shavings in it, as this indicates that parts are grinding together. If it’s black or sludgy, that’s time to change it, since thick fluid won’t do a very good job lubricating the engine of an ATV.
Filters
Since your Kawasaki ATV takes you off road, it has filters to block harmful particles from getting inside your engine. The fuel filter, located below the fuel tank, doesn’t need to be changed that often. However, if your quad is a little older, you might want to consider getting this checked just in case. The oil filter should be changed every time you swap out the oil, and get a new air filter every three or four oil changes.
